 Believe me or not, but I suddenly needed a milimeter paper, and there was not the one I'd like to use on the web... The one we use to use at school... The green one with milimeter, half-centimeter, and centimeter grid.
The easiest way was to create it myself, then. Feel free to use too, if you need it:

Both are bitmaps size A4, adjusted for a printer resolution of 300 dots per inch. When printing, it's better to crop the printable area rather than choosing the default "Scale to printable media". Recently I bought HD Camcorder Canon Vixia HF100. However, before the actual purchase, I had not been quite sure if my laptop would manage to play the records back without interruptions.
As far as I knew, there were no sample videos available. To improve the situation and to help other potential buyers, I put a sample video and a sample photo at the following locations:

Now you can see if you would be better off with a new machine, or if the current one still suffices for the playback. But even if the playback stutters, things can be considerably improved using a proper codec.
Canon HF10/HF100 uses Advanced Video Codec High Definition (AVCHD), more specificaly H.264/MPEG4 AVC. Most likely, you will experience one of the following problems:
- No video at all
- No sound at all
- Video playback stutters
- The image gets blured when moving the camcorder horizontaly (so called interlace combing).
If there is no video at all, any codec pack can improve this. You can try K-lite Codec Pack for example, to get at least some output. However, the playback will be probably slow, and the deinterlacing will not work properly.
If there is no sound, you should download and install any AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) codec. One example is free CoreAAC codec.
The tackle the letter two problems, the only solution seems to be using CoreAVC. Allegedly, this is the fastest available AVCHD codec. I can confirm that this was the only working solution for me. Even though the official codec available on the CD with the camcorder dealt good with the interlace combing, the speed was not sufficient for me. My laptop contains Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 @2.0 GHz with 3 GB of RAM, whereas the offical requirement for Windows Vista & Dual Core was something like 2.13 GHz and 2 GB RAM. This resulted in a discuntinuous playback.
On the other hand, CoreAVC worked perfectly well. You can download a free 14 days evaluation version and try it yourself.
When playing back using this codec, an appropriate icon appers in the system tray. Click it and a settings dialog appears.
The only thing you should be aware is that the codec is not prioritized, even when the preferred decoder checkbox checked. You can test what codec is actualy in use after going to the levels tab. When changing brightness/contrast/saturation, the changes should be immediately notified. If not, a different codec is still in play. Eventualy, I had to uninstall both the K-Lite codec pack and the official codec provided by Canon on the installation CD. Next, I installed XP Codec Pack 2.4.2, chose a custom setup, and excluded the supplied .H264 codec from the installation. An incident in Ilac Shoping Centre

 I was just about to do my shopping at Argos in Ilac Shopping Centre on Parnell Street in Dublin. When I was passing the Vodafone store and approaching Argos, I saw one guy chasing another one shouting: “Catch him!” What I thought at first was that the fleeing one had probably stolen his wallet, so I did not hesitate and started to follow him, too.
Funny enough, the running guy in front of me threw about banknotes continuously, as if trying to bribe me not to follow him. It could be about €200 in total. “Easy money”, stroke me at the moment, but I considered helping another person to get back his wallet such a noble objective, that I only picked up one €20 banknote, and continued to hunt him.
I followed him up to Lower Dominic Street, where he turned left into a residential area. There was a playground with children at play and adults taking care of them. I cried: “Catch him and call Garda!” Then I finally caught him in front of a fence.
Security guards from Ilac Shopping Centre appeared before long. That was when I held the guy tight. People around told me that Garda was on the way. I asked the guards to help me with to secure him at least, telling them that I could lose my grasp soon. But the guards we evidently too scared to come closer to us. On the contrary, they insisted on releasing him. They were telling me:”We know who he is, there will be no problem for Garda to go and fetch him, really”. So I let him go eventually, after about two minutes of holding him.
Next, two Gardai appeared at the site. Their first inquiry was: “Fuck, he is gone, why did you let him go?” So I explained them why. The Security guards started to sooth the audience telling that although they did’t actually know who the guy was, Ilac Shopping Centre is full of cameras, so there would be no problem to provide a CCTV footage. They also had an argument with Garda about possible legal consequences for the abridgement of the offender’s personal liberty. Garda clarified them that this works a little bit differently in case someone has committed a crime.
I handed over his cap and the banknote, provided his identification description and that was it. Garda was so kind to take me home, although I lived nearby. “What actually did he?” That was my first question to the Gardai once I was comfortably set in their car. The answer shocked me, because it had been more a robbery rather than a pocket-picking. Presumably in Argos, he jumped over a till and took the money out from there.
Anyway, next to you feel sympathy for that people of poorly built physique lingering over at shop entrances in worn-out suits, with a wire twisting out from their ear, earning just €8 an hour or so, don’t get fooled!  Obecně prospěšná společnost Člověk v tísni nedávno spustila kampaň proti pravicovému extremismu „Chcete ho?“. Zanedlouho tuto parodii na členy hnutí skinheads paradovala krajně pravicová Národní strana a spustila pro změnu kampaň „Chcete je?“, namířenou proti přistěhovalcům do České republiky.
Ačkoliv si obecně aktivit Člověka v tísni vážím, neodpustím si dodat, že samotná kampaň „Chcete ho?“ ve mně vyvolává pocit trapnosti. Naopak moje prvotní reakce u konkurenční kampaně byla taková, že jsem se „vtipu“ o modlitebním koberečku skutečně zasmál, než jsem si se studem uvědomil, že obdobně vyhlížejícího člověka, bohužel však většinou počestného studenta VŠ bez pedofilních sklonů, nejednou bezdůvodně napadla v Praze skupina skinheadů.
Následuje analýza toho, jak na mě obě kampaně působily.
Zesměšňování směšného nepůsobí směšně
Podívejme se nejprve na původní kampaň „Chcete ho?“ zaměřenou proti extremistům. Extremismus je jev chápaný drtivou většinou jako nepřípustný. Projevovat na veřejnosti rasistické názory je tabu. Všichni cítíme, že nacizmus a jeho stoupenci jsou odsouzeníhodní. To je zřejmě důvod, proč satiristicky koncipovaná kampaň moc nezabírá. Tvrzení typu: „Já jsem nacista, jsem úplný chudák, podívejte se na mě“ vovolá maximálně schovívavý úsměv, a to spíše nad kreativními (ne)schopností autora kampaně než nad nacisty samotnými. Satira, která je v souladu s obecným názorem, je zkrátka účinná asi tak, jako zesměšňování disidentů Miloušem Jakešem za dob socializmu.
 Naopak kampaň proti přistěhovalcům působí (bohužel) účiněji. Funguje zde onen známý efekt zakázaného ovoce. V první reakci se člověk vtipům zasměje, byť jsou někde na úrovni estrád Jiřího Krampola. Posléze se chytne za nos a začne se za svou škodolibost stydět. Nakonec se však vážně zamyslí, jestli na tom není něco pravdy, tvrzení „těší se na sociální dávky a vaše dcery“ si asociuje s aférou kolem katarského prince, a semínko xenofobie je zaseto.
Přitom Národní straně při počinu stačilo použít originální grafiku a průvodní text, pouze s obměnou hrdinů kampaně. To bylo hodně chytré, rozhodně nic z dílny „nácka, co neumí do pěti počítat“.
Pozitivní přístup
Zesměšňování kohokoliv je ubohé, a mnoho se jím nedosáhne. Ať už se jedná o nácky, nebo přistěhovalce. Neobstojí zde ani argument Člověka v tísni, že bojuje za dobrou věc, ani fakt, že Národní strana vlastně jen oplácí úder ideového nepřítele, navíc jeho vlastními zbraněmi.
Přimlouval bych se za kampaň vedenou regulérně. Bylo by například přínosné častěji populární formou zveřejňovat výsledky sociologického studia extremistických hnutí a jejich příslušníků. Z jakých vrstev společnosti se rekrutují, jaké jsou jejich pohnutky k tomu, aby s extremizmem sympatizovali, v čem je jejich chování rizikové a kudy vede cesta zpět k úspěšnému prosazení se ve většinové společnosti. Je třeba zdůraňovat i fakt, že na pravicovém smýšlení a na samotné obavě z přílivu cizinců není nic špatného. Nežádoucí jsou pouze extrémní projevy – i zde platí ono obecné „všeho s mírou“. Třeba by pak i Národní strana zareagovala adekvátním způsobem. Místo karikatur přistěhovalců a evidentně utopických řešení bych spíše uvítal realistické návrhy toho, jak problémy spojené s přistěhovalectvím (kterému se stejně nevyhneme) řešit.
Že by seriózní protiextremistická kampaň ani seriózní přístup k menšinám nikoho nezaujal?
Máte naprostou pravdu! Pokud Národní strana jede podle nějakého marketingového plánu s cílem sepepropagace a zvýšení preferencí, není co dodat. Pokud ovšem Člověk v tísni skutečně usiluje o dobrou věc, nezbyde mu zřejmě nic jiného než se uchýlit k čistým prostředkům.

Znamená výše řečené, že bychom měli na satiru při potírání xenofobie zapomenout? Sacha Baron Kohen v podání Borata nás před časem přesvědčil o opaku. Jehoprojev byl sarkastický, inteligentní, vtipný, komerčně úspěšný, a přitom nadmíru společensky přínosný. Čím to je? Borat nezesměšňoval ani nácky, ani přistěhovalce, nýbrž naší vlastní omezenost.

 ...aneb k čemu si pořizovat kuchyňskou váhu, když máme odměrný válec.
Rozhodnete-li se upéct si třeba koláč, bude po vás pravděpodobně vyžadováno nasypat do mísy X gramů mouky, přidat Y gramů cukru a tak dále. Nemáte-li zrovna po ruce kuchyňskou váhu, zkuste následující odkaz:

Stránka v anglickém jazyce obsahuje pestrý seznam kuchyňských surovin a pro vybranou ingredienci vám podle její jmenovité hustoty automaticky přepočte zadanou hmotnost (v gramech) na objem (v mililitrech). Pak už stačí použít odměrnou nádobu se stupnicí, která se jistě najde v každé kuchyni. It came across my mind when I was watching those absurd shots of Olympic torch relay in Paris together with anti-China protesters trying to extinguish the flame.
Besides general boycott of the games, I would be naturally more than happy if China had ended the Tibet occupation. Can I actually contribute on the democratisation of China in person? Well, I live neither in London nor in Paris, so to demonstrate my opinion would not be so easy.
But the Tibet question really goes to my heart, so I would even drop a penny in a hat, if it puts more pressure on China and solves the problem. Does anyone know about a “Give us money and we’ll put more pressure on China” commercial company? Because the last thing I would do is to relay on politicians.
Democracy is a good thing, but it is certainly far from perfection. Take the broadly discussed smoking ban in the Czech Republic as an example. Putting such a measure in place, every single citizen would probably profit from it. Let’s say it would save € 100 per person per year indirectly on health service, cleaning service, laundering (to remove the smell from one’s clothing), etc. Looks good, so why don’t we go for it? Well, in democracy, 200 PMs decide what actions to perform, rather than 10,000,000 citizens. There is still a minority of population which would not profit at all – the employees/owners of the tobacco industry. To keep it simple, let’s assume it is just 10 people, each of them would lose € 1,000,000 by the smoking ban.
It is obvious that these 10 capable gentlemen will do their best to persuade the 200 PMs (or at least 100 out of them) and to compensate generously their €100 loss. After all, it is still cheaper than compensate the loss of the whole society.
You may disagree, pointing out that all people, if they feel disappointed, are free to vote for a different politician during next elections. Well, not really. If the next politician betrays the electors and refuses the ban, it will only cost him €100, same as his foregoer.
One can suggest to control the executive power via a web interface available to all citizens, using a sophisticated IS instead of the traditional old-fashion government. In that case, every division on a bill would be a nation-wide web referendum, in fact. The Ideal, direct democracy! Well, once this had been put into practice, the only thing people would certainly care about are their pay-rise, low taxes, and other benefits. I know it because these are the only things PMs do care about these days.
On the other hand, I think sometimes we really need a commercial company outsourced by the majority of citizens in order to outweigh the powerful industrial lobbies. We actually do something similar when establishing a trade union, or when referring to commercial journalists to win more attention for our legal process, or when simply expecting Amnesty International to help make the world better. The company would have its membership fees, and each member would be able to decide what exactly to lobby for.
I know it reminds old times when election votes were not equal, depending on one’s status and wealth. However, they are barely more equal now, since anyone who has money can influence media, and media can in turn influence electors. The only solution for future seems to be the return back to reality, making the financial flows more transparent.
Once someone has founded such a nationwide commercial lobby, please tell me where to send the money.
